EMDR Therapy in NYC with a Certified EMDR Therapist

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Psychologist Francine Shapiro developed it in the late 1980s to help people process distressing memories. The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) describes it as a structured psychotherapy. You briefly focus on a memory while receiving bilateral stimulation.

Bilateral stimulation means left-right input. In a session, you might follow the psychotherapist's hand with your eyes, feel taps that alternate from side to side, or hear tones in each ear.

What is EMDR therapy?

People come to EMDR with us for trauma and PTSD, including trauma from childhood or from a medical experience. Others come with anxiety, panic attacks or nerves about performing, or because they are grieving someone they have lost.

Who comes to EMDR

First, your psychotherapist goes over your goals with you to see whether EMDR fits. For some people, ongoing talk therapy or a mix of both suits better. You can ask about this in the free consultation.

According to EMDRIA, EMDR starts with a preparation phase before any memory work. In it, you practice ways to settle your body and mind, so they are ready if a session feels like a lot.

We offer EMDR on its own or as part of ongoing individual therapy. It can sit alongside psychodynamic work, which looks at where a pattern started, or body-based somatic work.

How EMDR sessions work here

Weekly EMDR or an EMDR intensive?

Weekly sessions spread the work out over time, often alongside talk therapy. An EMDR intensive fits the work into a few days, mostly on weekends or certain weekdays. Intensives run in person in Manhattan or Brooklyn, or online, and you book them by email.
